Hi everyone! Recently a lot of you have been asking me for blog advice, and I absolutely LOVE answering those questions when I get them. Seriously, if you ever have any questions, send them my way and I would be more than happy to answer whatever you are wondering. I am honestly flattered to hear from you guys!

Anywho, I always tell everyone that my one piece of blog advice is to be transparent and not be afraid to get real on your blog. I tell everyone this yet lately, I have felt like I am not doing the same with you. Like I am scared to open up or that I might be judged for something that I say. Well that is going to stop today. I want this to be a place where yes, I share my daily outfits and fashion inspiration, but I also want it to be more than that. I want it to be deeper than that. By opening up and sharing what’s on my heart, maybe I can help one person or connect with someone who is at the same place in life.

One of my best friends, Brittany from Hello Honey blog, had the idea first to write a letter to herself. Then this past weekend at Brunch and Slay, one of the speakers asked us all what we would write in a letter to ourselves. What would we say if we were writing to ourself 10 years from now? Well, that really got me thinking and so here it goes. I guess if I’m going to really do this, I better start this off right so here it goes.

Dear Shelbi,

That probably sounds weird reading a letter to yourself from yourself but just go with it. You are always giving advice to others, and pretty darn good advice at that, but you never seem to take your own. It probably doesn’t help that you are flying through life at a million miles a minute and barely pause to take time for yourself. That’s one thing that you need to learn, to pause and be present, especially for the people and things that matter most to you. At the end of the day there will always be more work, there will always be more things to do, and your to-do list might never get done, but none of that is important. What is important is that you show up for the people that show up for you and even when sometimes they don’t. Don’t lose sight of what is important in life and when you do, pause, put down the worries of deadlines, fear of missing out, laziness, or any other excuses and show up. Be present.

Stop worrying about what you cannot control. It’s going to take you a little while to find the path to what you want to do in life but don’t stop trying. Each new person you meet and each new experience is going to bring you closer to where you are supposed to be. Slowly but surely you will find your way. Don’t even worry about boys. The moment you stop looking is when God will place somebody in your life. Or that’s what you’ve got to keep telling yourself otherwise you are going to go crazy and overthink everything more than you already do. But really, trust God always because he’s got your back even when you start to think he doesn’t.

Our world is starting to harden you and each new tragedy makes you more and more emotionless. Don’t ever become numb. Instead feel everything, even when you don’t want to. Even through the breakups that feel like they will never pass. Even when friends start to fade away. Even when those close to you go to be with the Lord. It won’t be easy but it will be worth it. You will be stronger and you will make it. Find happiness in the little things even when it is hard. Get out, explore and be adventurous, even when you aren’t feeling up to it because that’s when you end up having the most fun and come back smiling.

Be smart with your finances. You were a Finance major after all! Stop being lazy and start caring about saving money. I know that you joke that there is no use in taking any money to the grave with you but let’s be real here for a minute. You are going to live a long life (if you don’t run out of money and become a hobo!) so start thinking about the fact that some day you will have bigger bills to pay than your credit card bill consisting of online shopping and excessive Chick-fil-a trips. Some day you will want to buy a house and you might even be crazy enough to have kids and if they are anything like you, they are going to cost a fortune!

When it comes to friends- quality over quantity. You make friends easily but you are picky about who you let in. You read people far too well and that is something that may get you in to trouble sometimes, but it is also the reason why you are selective when it comes to people you trust. You also have never had a problem telling it how it is. You call it “honesty” but others who aren’t as upfront might find it rude sometimes. Don’t lost your sense of honesty but maybe tone it down a notch. Sally doesn’t need to actually know if she looks fat in that crop top. Maybe just let that one slide. But really, if you are ever feeling down about the quantity of friends that you have, remember that you are far more lucky to have quality friends than an abundance of friends that do not genuinely care about you.

Ok if you’ve made it this far, I have one last piece of advice for you. You have got to stop eating like crap and start taking care of your body. I know you think that you will never gain weight and that you’d literally rather die than go to the grocery store, but you have got to learn what green beans taste like. Also your poor future husband would probably appreciate it if you learned to cook because a diet consisting of Spaghetti O’s and frozen pizza is probably not going to cut it. Hint hint: this would probably also help you cut down on your credit card bills since you eat every single meal out.

Above all, remember to count your blessings, give thanks where it is due, stand up for what you believe in, show up and be present, put your phone down, get more sleep, learn to like green beans, do more of what makes your soul happy, spend less on clothes, and never lose sight of who you are and what you want in life.

A couple of weeks ago, a few Houston bloggers and I enjoyed a night out at MKT BAR Houston. If you are from the area and have heard of Phoenicia Foods then you know what a treat this was! We started out the night with a tour of Phoenicia Foods by the owner herself and got to sample several different greek appetizers that left me wanting more! If you have not been to the store, you are missing out on an incredible experience. The store alone is a sight to see with it’s impressive grocery selection, delicious ready-made food, and the pita conveyer belt that runs the length of the store! I felt like I was at Willa Wonka’s Chocolate Factory with everything there was to see and taste!

After our tour of Phoenicia, we were greeted with several different refreshing, Summer cocktails. It was a close call but two drinks stole the show. The Melon Cooler which features prosseco and their house-infused watermelon syrup, and the Splish Splash Cocktail that features dill infused agave nectar, pinot grigio and strained cucumber.

While there was not one thing I tried that I didn’t like, my favorites included the meat and cheese tray, Roasted Chicken entree, and the Veg Out Pizza.

Summer Cocktails you have to try! From left to right: Melon Cooler, Ginger Blossom, Grapefruit Rita, Champagne, and the Splish Splash. I’m already planning my next ladies night just thinking about them!

If you are like me and like an excellent meat and cheese tray selection to go with your evening wine, look no further because I have officially found the best place in town for you to go that won’t break the bank. Charcuterie and cheese plates are only $9 on Wednesdays and select bottles of wine are half off!

The Half Roasted Chicken dish made me nostalgic for a delicious home cooked meal. The chicken was prepared with olives and lemon and served with garlic mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus. YUM is an understatement!

Last but not least, my absolute favorite! My mouth is seriously watering as I write this because it was THAT GOOD. A pizza that has goat cheese, pesto and brussel sprouts people. I repeat goat cheese, pesto AND brussel sprouts. I am not kidding when I say this is hands down the best pizza I have ever had and will be back regularly just to get this!

The dessert and coffee selection is also something that should not go unspoken as both were just as amazing (if not more) than the food! The Apple Baklava and snickerdoodle gelato is a must try!

OK now calling all Houston foodies:

Monday- Fridays: Happy Hour from 4-6 PM featuring $5 glasses of wine, $4 draft beer, $3 bottles and appetizer specials

Tuesdays & Thursdays: 2-10 PM enjoying a delicious $12.99 steak dinner

Wednesdays: 7-10 PM Vinyl & Vino Night- Enjoy Houston vinyl record players, a $5 glass of wine or half off a bottle and $9 charcuterie and cheese plates

Saturdays: Soul Sessions 8-11 PM- Hear the best of soul, funk, Motown and beyond. $5 cocktail specials

Saturdays & Sundays: Brunch 9-3 PM- Brunch Menu featuring waffles, eggs, pomegranate mimosas, specialty coffee and more. Live music on Sundays from 12-3.

If you are in the area and would like to meet up for some pizza and wine, hit me up because there’s a 100% chance I will say yes!

Being a #girlboss can take a lot of work so your outfit shouldn’t have to! If there is one thing that my mama taught me well, it was how to dress for success on a budget. Thanks mama! Dressing for success does not have to be costly and who doesn’t like to save a few dollars where they can? I don’t claim to always get everything for cheap, but I do make a conscious effort to make my dollars go as far as possible. That being said, here are my tips for all of my ladies out there that, like me, have a champagne taste on a beer budget.

Shop the sales

If you aren’t someone who normally gets excited about sales, it’s time to make a change! At some point the gorgeous blouse that you are coveting is going to go on major sale and you will kick yourself for paying full price. Stores are always looking for an excuse to push a sale so look out for the really good ones (40%+ off) and sit back for the duds (10-15%). Sign up for your favorite stores email lists and check them regularly. Sometimes email subscribers get inside information and it pays off to get all of those annoying emails! Outlets can also be your best friend. While they usually are a season behind, they offer greatly discounted clothes and you know they are still the name brand you love. J Crew Factory is my favorite for discounted work clothes- specifically their cropped pants. The majority of my work attire comes from Loft, Banana Republic, and J Crew Factory when they are having their major end of the year sales. I have scored work pants for $8/piece so I am telling you that the wait is worth it people!

Know when to save and when its ok to splurge

Have you ever heard the term, “Fashion comes and goes but style is timeless”? It is ok to splurge on the pieces that you know you will be able to wear for years to come. Think suits, blazers, an age-appropriate LBD, or well-made heels. This unfortunately does not include trendy pieces. So while you might be really tempted to run out and buy the season’s hottest new trend, unless you can find it for a reasonable price, I highly suggest saving your money. I tend to splurge on pieces that I can see myself wearing in 5 years and in order to do that the quality has to be there. Keep in mind that sometimes it is necessary to spend a bit more for quality if it is going to save you money in the long run.

Don’t allow yourself to shop for fun (on a regular basis)

This one gets me the most. Anyone else an emotional shopper? I get it, I have first hand experience that retail therapy can cure just about anything! I have spent hundreds of dollars trying to make myself feel better or simply because I was bored at the time. While this is ok on rare occasions, it can NOT be your norm. If you absolutely must- stick to places like Marshalls, TJ Maxx, or Target. I call these my safe zones because at least they are budget friendly. Be careful because these places can also sneak up on you if you go overboard, so my best piece of advice is to only allow yourself to purchase one item.

Stock up on staples

These are your classics that are never going out of style. They are the separates that you can wear to make several different outfits. For the most part, your staples are going to be your solid colors. Prints tend to come and go. Every #girlboss should own a white and black blouse, navy and black pants, and a black pencil skirt at the very least. These colors go with almost everything. I own several different white blouses because they go with any bottom that you can think of- pants, pencil skirts, shorts, you name it. You can’t go wrong investing in separates in white, navy, black, khaki, grey, and red.

It’s all in the details

Details can make or break an outfit but they can also help you recreate old looks and make them new again. Accessories can completely change an outfit by switching up your jewelry, belt, and purse so don’t forget about these. You do not need a ton of different details. Again, stick to pieces that you can wear with several different outfits and through multiple seasons. My go to place for details is Charming Charlie because they have great deals and everything is color coded so it’s super easy to choose from!

Hair Care with Function of Beauty

Function of Beauty | Personalized Hair Care | It's All Chic To Me

If my hair could talk, it would probably say something along the lines of “Shelbi does not take care of me”. My poor frizz-ball, hair really does deserve some TLC but I was clueless as to what in the world it needed! I have always picked random shampoos and conditioners at the grocery store that either smelled good or might seem to help tame my crazy hair at the time. But there are always SO many to choose from that I usually just get overwhelmed and stick to what I usually get (aka dry shampoo usually wins). I very rarely branch out because at the end of the day shampoo is just shampoo right? Wrong! I can now tell you that because of Function of Beauty, a hair care system that formulates your hair care regimen specifically to you and your hair’s needs. The system is fully customizable right down to the bottle with your name, scent, and color.

So how does it work? Well I like to think it’s like Subway for your hair! Ok Shelbi what does that really mean…? Everything about your set is about to be fully customized by YOU! You will start off by entering a profile of your hair. Mine included check boxes like “straight”, “medium” coarseness, and “oily”. Then you move on to complete your hair goals. There is a list of about 20 elements that you can choose from to get your hair to where you would like it based on your current hair needs. My goals included “anti-frizz”, “deep condition”, “oil control”, “volumize”, and “thermal protection”. Lastly you will get to choose your fragrance and colors from 5 scents and 4 colors. I chose cucumber mint which smells out of this world heavenly! Every combination sounded so lovely that it was a difficult choice and I can’t wait to try another!

I have absolutely loved the results of my perfectly formulated shampoo and conditioner and I think if you asked my hair it might not get so snippety with you now 🙂 If you are like me and can get overwhelmed with picking out the best regimen for your hair, try out Function of Beauty. The cost is not terrible ($19/bottle) compared to higher end salon picks and should last you awhile depending on your hair length. I can promise you that this girl is a fan and will be ordering another set just as soon as mine runs out!

I love trying new things and also giving all of you the chance to try out these amazing brands so I have partnered with Function of Beauty to give away 3 fully customizable sets to 3 lucky readers. Instructions are on my Instagram profile (located here) and are super easy! All you have to do is be following both accounts and tag a friend. The giveaway will end Wednesday, June 8th at 10 pm CST and the winners will be announced the following day. Good luck!

*Thank you Function of Beauty for making this post possible. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own.*

A couple of weekends ago I had the opportunity to visit Napa for the first time and boy did it not disappoint! This wino was right at home once I was finally there, but packing for a new place and and a day full of wine tasting required a little bit of thought on what to wear. Sundress or jeans? Sandals or heels? Dressy or Casual? Being a newb to packing for the wine country, I grabbed a glass of wine (for research purposes) and did a little “Napa Style” research on Pinterest. In the end I had to stick to what I knew I would be comfortable in and still look cute for pictures. It’s a win-win formula. So continuing on in true wine fashion, I have a few tips to think about when packing for the wine country.

Tip 1: Research your winery

Depending on where you are going, this will be a determining factor for your attire. Wineries offer an array of different environments. If the wine tasting that you are attending has an outdoor vineyard tour, you might want to dress on the casual side (think jeans and a cute top) and heels would not be your friend through the soft-ground vineyards. If you are going to a nicer tasting inside, you might want to dress up (think sundress or skirt)and rock a wedge or heel. If you are still unsure about what you want to wear, it never hurts to coordinate with others in your party. That way no matter how you dress, you won’t be out of place!

Tip 2: Choose your footwear wisely

Your best bet is to wear a comfortable pair of sandals or tennis shoe as these are your most comfortable options. It is most likely that you will be standing up during your tasting and you might even take a trek through an outdoor vineyard. If you know you will be inside, wedges and heels are certainly acceptable just make sure they are comfortable. You want to be able to enjoy your wine and not have to worry about the growing blister on your toe. We have got bigger fish to fry- like making it to your fourth winery of the day! This pair of wedges that I wore to multiple wineries did not hurt my feet one bit and they are under $20.

Tip 3: Skip the white

I remember my first wine tasting. But really, you are most likely going to be drinking red wine at some point and spills happen. Stick to darker colors that will not show if you miss your mouth or bump into someone. I also suggest not wearing shoes that you would mind getting wine spilled on.

Tip 4: Bring layers

Many of the wineries have outdoor spaces and patios to enjoy a glass of wine and enjoy the scenery. Some wineries might purposefully have the air inside set at a lower temperature as a precaution to keep wine from evaporating. So instead of being caught off guard, make sure to pack a light sweater.

Tip 5: Minimalist for the day

You will not want to haul around much throughout the day. This is mostly because you will be standing or walking and comfort is key. Whatever attire you decide to wear, don’t feel like you need to go all out on accessories. I stuck to my one statement, cork bracelet and was glad I did. Bring a small clutch, like my adorable Elaine Turner Bella cork clutch or satchel to hold your necessities. The only items that I brought to put in my purse were my credit card, ID, chapstick, sunglasses and phone.

Tip 6: Think about your beauty routine

Skip the lipstick. You will be tasting so many wines that 1) it will all come off anyways 2) it can get into your wine and inhibit the taste and 3) it will just leave an icky residue on every glass that you use, making the wine guide roll his eyes at you. Next up let’s talk about your hair. It was super humid when I went and so hats were my best friend. It will be a long day so style your hair appropriately and keep pictures in mind!

I hope this helps you get a little inspiration when picking out outfits for your next wine tasting. Whatever you decide to wear, Elaine Turner has you covered in the accessories department. Their Spring cork line is the perfect accessory to compliment your wine attire. If you will be heading to Napa, California and have questions on where to stay, what wineries are best, or where to eat, I have you covered in this blog post. Otherwise I wish you and your wine tolerance all the best! Cheers, friends 🙂
