How To Grow Your Blogger Tribe

Something that has been on my heart lately is really telling you guys about this blogging journey-how much it takes and how I have managed to stay afloat. Time, energy, creativity, photo shoots, editing, writing sessions…. well you get the picture. Don’t get me wrong, I am only 4 months into my blogging journey but I am hooked! Between having a full time job and a blog on top of that, one thing that I have learned is that you really can’t do it all on your own. [Insert tribe here]. What is a tribe? Well google defines it as a distinctive, close-knit group with a common culture and dialect. Your tribe is exactly that. They have your back. They keep you inspired to keep going and keep creating. They are the girls (or guys) that you can go to for questions and that cheer you on. And above all they should be your biggest support group. That’s what these ladies below are to me, and I am sharing my secret on how you can grow your tribe too! There are a lot more ladies that I have met through this blogging journey that I can call some of my best friends and, slowly but surely, that tribe grows! So in case you didn’t see my Thrive Tribe post, I want to introduce to you Dawn from Dawn P. Darnell, Dede from Dress Up Buttercup and Margret from Style The Girl.

How To Grow Your Tribe

  1. Get out and make it happen– Things and people do not just come to you. This applies to so many things in life but I say that because you cannot just expect your tribe to happen. You have to make it happen. It might be awkward to reach out to people but if it’s one thing that I have learned is that people are usually open to meeting up because who doesn’t want new friends?
  2. Use Instagram- My biggest suggestion is using Instagram to find like minded people. It sounds creepy at first but just get past that because I promise you 1) it is not, everyone does it and 2) it is how I have met the majority of my blogger besties. Follow people on Instagram that inspire you, have similar interests to you, and honestly people that you could see yourself being friends with. Connect with those people. Like and comment on their stuff letting them know that you enjoy their content and that they are doing a good job. Doesn’t everyone like to be praised? The answer is yes and it will get you noticed. The chances of them wanting to get to know you will increase greatly if you have already established that connection.
  3. Don’t be fake– I felt like I should follow up that last point with this one. Be genuine in your interactions and don’t have ulterior motives. It is easy to spot someone that is not reaching out or making contact for the right reasons. I’m going to leave this one at that.
  4. Ask to get coffee- Almost anyone has time to get coffee and chat. It doesn’t hurt to ask. I have had a lot of luck reaching out to people and asking if they would just like to meet up and get coffee. Coffee is non-binding and is just the right amount of time. If the meet up goes horribly wrong (which I can say has never happened to me), you can chug your coffee and get out of there in no time. The majority of the time though we end up staying hours and the coffee was just a ploy to get us both there.
  5. Attend local blogger events- This one is a little tough until you are a bit established, but the best way I find out about local events is through social media. Facebook being a big one. Go follow other bloggers on Facebook and like their actual blog page. This is where a lot of bloggers will post about events. Once at the event don’t just talk to people you already know. I usually catch up with my girls and then make a point to make my rounds. There are usually people there that I recognize from Instagram so I will go up and introduce myself. Social media can make a connection but face-to-face interactions are far more personal and will establish a relationship.

So there you have it, pretty easy right? You might have heard me say it before but I firmly believe that community over competition is key. There is enough room in this world for all of us to succeed! So if someone reaches out to you and wants to meet up, say yes! I take it as a compliment and love getting to know new people and chances are they are going to help you out at some point too.

Casual Weekend Wear

We’re half way through the week and I’ve got the weekend on my brain. After having a busy weekend this past week with the conference I am ready to relax a bit and celebrate my dad’s birthday. I am fortunate that my parents also live in Houston so we make the drive out there (I say out there because Houston is HUGE and they still live 30 minutes away) pretty often. I don’t know about you guys but when I am not working my go to casual outfit to throw on is some jeans and an easy t-shirt. 99% of the time my hair is in a top knot and my make-up is not on point. But then I feel like a slob and I’ll try to look presentable by throwing on some lipstick and accessories. It work’s every time! Have y’all seen that quote, “there is always lipstick”? Well I truly believe that it can do wonders for your presentation. I took this outfit from drab to fab with just a pop of color on my lips, accessories and cute shoes. It’s all in the details. I can’t stress that enough!

This Wallaby bag by Charming Charlie could not be more perfect to throw all of my stuff into for all of my weekend festivities. The best part is that it is so versatile that I can wear it with anything. It can be worn as a satchel or handbag and comes in so many colors. At $29 I can safely say it will be one that I carry around for awhile simply based on functionality!

Top ($10) | Jeans (50% off!) | Shoes | Purse | Sunglasses | Bracelet 1 | Bracelet 2 | Bracelet 2 | Lipstick

I actually found these jeans at Marshalls for $15. They fit me so great and are the perfect amount of distressed. I found and linked the EXACT pair for you guys and they are even %50 off right now! My top is currently less than $10 from Forever 21. I found a couple of other really cute options that are better quality if you aren’t a Forever fan here and here.

What are you guys doing for the weekend? I am going to see Jason Aldean and Jason Derulo at the Houston Rodeo tomorrow and Friday. The rodeo is my favorite time of the year and fried Oreos may or may not have everything to do with it. The inner fatty in me waits all year for this 🙂

Pinstripe Shirt Dress

This weekend I attended my first blogger conference and learned SO much. Stay tuned for my conference recap and tips on rocking your first conference coming to the blog next week. Until then I wanted to share my outfit that I wore this weekend. I decided to wear something that was sophisticated yet comfortable since it was a full day of events. This dress is one of my favorite business casual looks. Normally I would wear it with some brown pumps for work but since I had a bit more freedom for the conference I paired it with these heeled sandals instead. So a little bit of business up top but still ready to party on the bottom.

Dress (similar) | Shoes (newer version) |

You have probably heard me brag about these Sam Edelman heeled sandals a time or two. I am so obsessed. The chunky heel and high ankle support provide so much comfort. Sam Edelman makes some great shoes and I have never been unimpressed by their high fashion appeal or comfort level. They are a tad expensive but to me very well worth it!

Make sure to stay tuned this week as my Thrive roomies and I will be giving away a special treat to one of our readers and hint hint it has something to do with today’s post 🙂 Also don’t forget to check out BurdLife later this week for their new Spring launch. You can use code ThriveOn this weekend (March 3rd-6th) to receive 15% off + free shipping on any purchase!

Have a great week everyone!

Thrive Tribe & Pantone Spring Favorites

So what is this Pantone thing you keep hearing? Pantone is a company that publishes the top 10 color trends twice a year. Once in the Spring and another for the Fall. The great thing about this little forecaster tool is that as soon as the color choices come out, sure enough you start to see them everywhere in the fashion world. Check out this Spring’s top 10 colors below. This year is all about the pretty pastels and baby hues. Rose quartz and Serenity were named this season’s “Colors of the Year” so expect these 2 to be huge this season! You can check out what each color represents and how to style each here.image

I will be attending my very first blog conference this weekend (Thrive Blog Conference) and I am super excited about it. Yes there is an entire conference devoted to bloggers with speakers and everything. I’ve had people ask me what in the world there could be an entire conference on but I can assure you there is so much more that goes into blogging than meets the eye and I learn something new almost every day. I will certainly do a recap after the conference so you can get the 411 on what we actually learned about.  So now I want to introduce you to the lovely ladies that I have the pleasure of rooming with this weekend, also known as my Thrive Tribe. We have Dede (from Dress Up Buttercup), Margret (from Style The Girl) and Dawn (from Dawn P. Darnell). Each of us picked a color from the Spring Pantone pallet to showcase how all of these colors go so well together. Starting from the left, we have Dede modeling “Limpet Shell”, Dawn modeling “Rose Quartz”, me modeling “Fiesta” and Margret modeling “Serenity”.

It’s crazy to think that even the color that you wear gives off some sort of expression but it really does. So educate yourself on what you are projecting and have fun with mixing up some of these colors with pieces you probably already own in your own wardrobe!

Gone Wild

Did the post name catch you off guard? Well between my faux sheep skin vest and leopard shoes I thought it was pretty appropriate! To be honest when I saw this vest at Marshall’s I wasn’t sure about it at first. But like most things from there I bought it and took it home to play around with it. I think because it was a little different, it scared me at first. It is definitely a piece that draws your attention and stands out. But like any well-made outfit, isn’t that a good thing?! I love when people compliment me for wearing something different or when they say “Oo I haven’t seen that before”. Fashion is a statement of self expression and if you like it, then wear it! The magic happens the moment you venture to wear something that isn’t what everyone else is wearing and is authentic to you.

I love how high fashion this vest makes me feel and not to mention it is super soft and comfortable! The length hits right above my knee making it a little longer than most normal vests. Between the length and the fur this vest is hands down a bold statement piece for anyone’s closet.

You’ve probably noticed from other posts but I just can’t get enough of this MAC lipstick shade in “Diva”. It is the perfect fall/winter color! You can get it here!

My roomie gave me this beautiful pendant necklace for Christmas and sadly it is no longer available online but I have linked a couple similar options herehere and here (very cute Kate Spade option).

I had so much fun putting together this outfit. If you are scared to venture away from “the norm”, my advice is to start small. That is kind of what I did here. I love the faux fur trend but when I saw this vest I thought it blew the normal little fur vest out of the water. I had never seen one like this before. The length took it to a whole new level. So what you can do is take a trend that is already in place and put your own spin on it. Try a different color, different length, different pattern, pair 2 trends together, break a fashion rule (because there are no rules in fashion and don’t you think otherwise), etc. Do whatever it is to make it your own and then rock it!
