If you have been around my little space of the internet for some time, you may or may not know that on top of keeping up with the blog, there are other platforms that I create content for and post to regularly as well. All of these platforms would fall under the umbrella of social media. Today I thought I’d give you a breakdown of what I use each of them for so that you can pick and choose which to follow based on your interests and what works best for you!

Facebook

I actually have two Facebooks, one personal and one for my blog. I use Facebook to promote new blog posts, post photos that I take throughout the day, and share articles that I find inspiring. I like to think that Facebook is the all encompassing of blog posts, Instagram and personal photos, motivating or inspirational articles, as well as a place to find out about local events. If you are going to pick just one platform to follow, I suggest Facebook!

Instagram

I try not to pick favorites but I have to admit that Instagram usually wins out above everything else! If you are a visual person and like looking at photos rather than reading an entire blog post, then Instagram is for you. I share photos from recent blog posts, daily outfits that I think are worth sharing (aka when I actually look like I didn’t just roll out of bed), sale alerts, event coverage, vacation tidbits and really just lots and lots of clothes that you won’t find in a blog post! The best part about Instagram, is LikeToKnowIt. If you are not signed up for it your bank account is probably thanking you, but your closet certainly is not! Read all about how you can get outfit details of what I am wearing in my Instagram photos sent straight to your inbox after liking an Instagram picture here.

Pinterest

Pinterest has been around for awhile and you probably know it as your go-to site when you want to make some new fancy recipe, get crafty, or plan your next home renovation. Yes, all of that is true but did you know that it is also a great source for fashion inspiration as well? If you visit my Pinterest, I have boards that cover everything from blog photos to fashion inspiration and vacation hot spots to recipes that I am dying to try. For the most part, Pinterest is going to be everything that inspires me, not just all fashion. If you think we have similar taste in style then I bet you might find that we might also like the same recipes, work wear, vacation spots, beauty tips, crafts and so much more!

Snapchat

Snapchat qualifies as my second favorite social media tool. It’s where things get interesting and a little weird 🙂 Want to see what I do throughout the day? Snapchat is where it’s at. You will see everything from my outfit every morning to probably every single meal that I eat. Because where else can you take pictures of your daily Chick-fil-a meals and not be judged? Out of all of the other social media platforms, Snapchat is by far the most personal and gives you a look at what I do in my normal day life. It’s not staged and it’s not planned out unlike almost every other platform. It’s where I can be goofy and share tidbits of my day. I also love that I can interact with all of you via selfies and instant messaging. If we aren’t Snapchat friends-, go add me right now- my handle is shelbiadams!

Twitter

Last but certainly not least is Twitter, and to be honest it is my least favorite and I secretly wish it would die out. Harsh? Sorry Twitter, no hard feelings I hope. I do not keep up with Twitter as much as I should but it is a way to get blog updates, photos and random thoughts from people. If you are more about news and facts, Twitter is for you! Otherwise to me it seems like a dying breed.

So there you have it, a break down of all of the different social media platforms and how I use them! I hope that if we aren’t already following each other that we are now! I love getting to connect with each one of you outside of blogging and hopefully on a more personal level. I definitely have a love/hate relationship with all of the craziness that comes along with social media but the one good thing that it does is let me get to know all of you!

*Thank you Christian Paul Watches for making this post possible.*

I will be the first to say that I definitely don’t have everything figured out when it comes to having a work-life balance and I am still trying to get a handle on working 2 jobs. I guess you could say that I have always bitten off more than I can chew. I think that stems from a serious case of FOMO (fear of missing out). Yes that is a real thing, and yes I definitely suffer from this insane disease.

From taking a look at my Instagram or other social media, I probably look like I have my stuff together. (And if I don’t, feel free to continue letting myself think that I do). But in all actuality, most days I am teetering on the edge of insanity. My poor body no longer knows what sleep is. My full time job is not getting the 100% undivided attention that it deserves. Blog deadlines have come and gone. And to top it all off my social life is hanging by a thread. Let’s not even attempt to throw a boy into that mix because that would really make things come crashing down.

So to help myself try to gain a little more control and take back my work-life balance, I’ve tried to enforce a few rules. I am definitely failing on several of these accounts but slowly but surely I think they will be a good base to get to where I want and need to be. Not just for sanity’s sake, but for an overall health stand point.

Plan. Plan. Plan

My friends hate to be “penciled” in and I hate being the friend that never has time to hang out, so I’ve started purposely leaving days open in my ever-growing planner. Most of my weeks are scheduled 2-4 weeks in advance with blog events, happy hours, meeting new people, and anything else that pops up. Having so many things to do can be stressful at times, but planning it all out and making sure I specifically pencil in personal time on top of blog or work events is a must.

Practice Saying No

It is not in my DNA to turn anything down, especially something that sounds like a fun opportunity! I like to think of myself as a “yes girl” that is always up for anything and let’s not forget the FOMO problem. Well even super heroes need a break every once and a while to cool off and recharge the batteries. You cannot function at your prime if you are overrunning yourself or not penciling in down time.

Avoid Multitasking

I don’t care if you claim to be a pro multitasker, it’s not possible. Each area of your life deserves your undivided attention and if you want “balance” while still maintaining dedication to each area of your life, then give 100% to each area. I am the queen of trying to do 3 things at once and failing to get a single thing done. For some reason we have this idea in our head that we have to get everything done in as little time as possible so we try to do multiple things at once. I’ve quickly learned that this ends up stressing me out even more than if I had I just completed one task at a time. So when you are with friends or family put your phone down. When you are working, don’t tempt yourself to watch TV.

Eliminate Wasted Time

This is not to say don’t ever take time for yourself. This is more so a reminder that there are several things that we do throughout the day where we could have made better use of our time. Who else spends an ungodly amount of time on social media? I am the first to admit that it is the first thing I check in the morning and the last thing I check before bed. That’s probably at least an hour out of my day that I waste on social media that I could be doing something productive. Some things we don’t even realize we waste time on. For example maybe it is spending too much time getting ready in the morning, running errands in an inefficient manner, or pressing snooze one too many times.

Have Fun

This probably sounds like a no brainer but for us #girlbosses sometimes we need that reminder. I know I get so caught up in what I constantly need to be doing that I worry more about deadlines and to-do lists than what really matters in life. Somehow I easily forget what a night off with friends and laughter does for the soul. I don’t know about y’all but wine and girlfriends make for some pretty fun nights and always leave me refreshed (if i don’t go overboard with the wine that is) and inspired.

One of my favorite quotes reads  “Never get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life”. I’ve been under this impression that if I can just get a grasp on 2 jobs, a social life, and dating that I will finally have everything figured out. Well after almost 9 months of having 2 jobs and a teetering social life, I can tell you that it is easier said than done. I am slowly but surely trying to live up to that saying though, even if I have to constantly remind myself to have fun every once and a while or that I have to turn down some events. I would love to hear how you do it all and any tips that you have for me! O and if you have any remedies for a serious case of FOMO I’d love to hear your suggestions on that one too!

Top | Pants (similar) | Shoes | Earrings | Bracelet | Purse | Coffee Mug

Being a #girlboss can take a lot of work so your outfit shouldn’t have to! If there is one thing that my mama taught me well, it was how to dress for success on a budget. Thanks mama! Dressing for success does not have to be costly and who doesn’t like to save a few dollars where they can? I don’t claim to always get everything for cheap, but I do make a conscious effort to make my dollars go as far as possible. That being said, here are my tips for all of my ladies out there that, like me, have a champagne taste on a beer budget.

Shop the sales

If you aren’t someone who normally gets excited about sales, it’s time to make a change! At some point the gorgeous blouse that you are coveting is going to go on major sale and you will kick yourself for paying full price. Stores are always looking for an excuse to push a sale so look out for the really good ones (40%+ off) and sit back for the duds (10-15%). Sign up for your favorite stores email lists and check them regularly. Sometimes email subscribers get inside information and it pays off to get all of those annoying emails! Outlets can also be your best friend. While they usually are a season behind, they offer greatly discounted clothes and you know they are still the name brand you love. J Crew Factory is my favorite for discounted work clothes- specifically their cropped pants. The majority of my work attire comes from Loft, Banana Republic, and J Crew Factory when they are having their major end of the year sales. I have scored work pants for $8/piece so I am telling you that the wait is worth it people!

Know when to save and when its ok to splurge

Have you ever heard the term, “Fashion comes and goes but style is timeless”? It is ok to splurge on the pieces that you know you will be able to wear for years to come. Think suits, blazers, an age-appropriate LBD, or well-made heels. This unfortunately does not include trendy pieces. So while you might be really tempted to run out and buy the season’s hottest new trend, unless you can find it for a reasonable price, I highly suggest saving your money. I tend to splurge on pieces that I can see myself wearing in 5 years and in order to do that the quality has to be there. Keep in mind that sometimes it is necessary to spend a bit more for quality if it is going to save you money in the long run.

Don’t allow yourself to shop for fun (on a regular basis)

This one gets me the most. Anyone else an emotional shopper? I get it, I have first hand experience that retail therapy can cure just about anything! I have spent hundreds of dollars trying to make myself feel better or simply because I was bored at the time. While this is ok on rare occasions, it can NOT be your norm. If you absolutely must- stick to places like Marshalls, TJ Maxx, or Target. I call these my safe zones because at least they are budget friendly. Be careful because these places can also sneak up on you if you go overboard, so my best piece of advice is to only allow yourself to purchase one item.

Stock up on staples

These are your classics that are never going out of style. They are the separates that you can wear to make several different outfits. For the most part, your staples are going to be your solid colors. Prints tend to come and go. Every #girlboss should own a white and black blouse, navy and black pants, and a black pencil skirt at the very least. These colors go with almost everything. I own several different white blouses because they go with any bottom that you can think of- pants, pencil skirts, shorts, you name it. You can’t go wrong investing in separates in white, navy, black, khaki, grey, and red.

It’s all in the details

Details can make or break an outfit but they can also help you recreate old looks and make them new again. Accessories can completely change an outfit by switching up your jewelry, belt, and purse so don’t forget about these. You do not need a ton of different details. Again, stick to pieces that you can wear with several different outfits and through multiple seasons. My go to place for details is Charming Charlie because they have great deals and everything is color coded so it’s super easy to choose from!

WWW + Tips to Transition your Wardrobe between Seasons

Here we are- the first day of Summer! Just like that it’s time to pack up the last of your colder weather clothes and bring out all of the bright colored spaghetti straps. But you aren’t ready you say? Well neither am I. Whether you spent a bunch of money on a few pieces from last season, the weather hasn’t caught up to the season, or you just can’t get enough of your favorite separates, here are a few tips that I have found that can help transition last season’s best looks into the next.

Tip 1: Mind your Colors

There are colors that are distinct to each season. Spring and Summer are known for pastels and bright colors while Fall and Winter are reserved for the darker colors. While I do not suggest wearing all of last season’s colors at one time, you can easily keep last season’s colors alive by bringing in contrasting colors. Ivory, khaki, denim, and lighter shades of grey are neutral colors that can also help you between seasons when mixing colors.

Tip 2: Mind your Fabrics

Fabrics are also seasonal. Most of your warmer weather pieces will be made of cotton or linen. These types of fabrics are breathable and create an airy look. Fabrics such as velvet, cashmere, and wool are most definitely Winter staples and are much harder to transition. While there is just no getting around wearing velvet in the summer, your shoulder months are your times to experiment. Mix a sweater with cut off shorts or wear a scarf with a tank top.

Tip 3: Season vs. Weather

When in doubt weather trumps the season. If it is 80 degrees outside but the calendar says that it is Winter, do not feel like you need to bust out the wool coat. This also does not mean that you can slip into sandals and a bikini. Instead wear booties over boots, sneakers over sandals, button downs over sweaters, and denim over sweat pants. Layers are also your best friend when this is an issue. Throw on a cardigan or denim jacket over a dress or tank top.

Tip 4: Mix and Match

Rules are there are no rules in fashion. So while all fashion rules would tell you not to wear maroon or olive green in the middle of Spring (and certainly not in Summer), go against the odds and add in some brighter colors (like hot pink) to neutralize the Fall heavy hand. The key to transitioning your pieces is to have an overall balance. Do not go overboard on too much of one season’s staples. When in doubt about transitional pieces, use the 1/3 rule. Stick to only adding in one piece out of three from an off season. That way other’s eyes are most likely drawn to the pieces from the current season.

So while my dress and heels are from last season, I have found that adding in some hot pink touches can make it pass the test. How do you keep your favorite pieces alive all year long? I would love to hear!

I am so excited to announce that I will be starting up a new series on the blog called Work Wear Wednesday! A few times throughout the month I want to bring you ladies a few styles that are work appropriate as well as any advice that I can provide for all of my girl bosses out there! I have a full time job as a supply analyst in the energy industry and then blog with whatever hours are left in the day. Since a large part of starting this blog had to do with my first year of navigating my way in the working world while also seeming to “find” my own sense of work style, I thought that it was only appropriate to start sharing that part of my life with you! I would by no means call myself an expert on this stuff and you won’t find me going on any feminist rants, but I do aspire to inspire ladies in the workforce to always put your best (dressed) foot forward. I am a firm believer that when you put effort into your appearance, you are more motivated to also put effort into your daily responsibilities. One of my favorite quotes (as girly as it is) is “No mater how you feel, get up, dress up, show up, and never give up.”

Work Wear Wednesdays (WWW) are designed for anyone that has a reason that they need to wear something that is a bit more “professional”. The way we dress makes a statement and first impressions are everything. So whether it’s an interview, a business meeting, or just some other reason that you want to send a message that “I mean business”, my hope is that you leave here feeling inspired to put just as much effort into your work attire that you would into any other outfit!

I wanted to start off this series with a few things that I would consider a “must have” when it comes to attire that I am apt to throw on in the morning. Let’s be real, us girl bosses need our beauty sleep, we definitely don’t want to wake up any earlier than we have to and most certainly don’t want to spend longer “primping” than absolutely necessary. Hang tight. I’ve got you covered. 1) Dresses are by far the easiest piece of clothing to throw on in the mornings. This Splash of Sass dress covered my top 2 requirements: comfy and chic. 2) If you do not already own a few neutral colored pumps, it’s time to invest. At the very least you need a pair of sensible brown, black and white heels. They go with EVERYTHING. 3) Minimal accessories are best for work. This is mostly a personal preference for me since I am on the computer all day so I personally think that they get in the way. Let your outfit make a statement so that you don’t have to worry about the accessories. Less work for you!

I’ve linked a few save vs. splurge options above and below for all price points. Stay tuned each week for my work style inspiration and how I seem to manage two jobs. I will do my best to share my best kept secrets and feel free to let me know what else you would like to hear about. I would love to cover any topics that you are interested in!

For all of my Houston area ladies, make sure you check out A Splash of Sass out in Cypress,TX. Like I said, my adorable dress is from here and although their website shop page is currently in the works, you can call them (832-559-8789) to order my dress and they will ship nation wide. They also have the best selection of trendy clothes, accessories and gifts that any girl would love, not to mention the owners are a hoot so make sure you check them out!
