Natural Beaded Row Hair Extensions Q + A

Natural Beaded Row Extensions HoustonNatural Beaded Row Extensions Houston

WHAT KIND OF EXTENSIONS DID YOU GET?

I got Natural Beaded Row (NBRs) extensions originally founded and created by Danielle of DKW Styling. You can learn more about this kind of extension method here.

WHAT LENGTH ARE THEY?

I got the 18 inch hair but you are able to get 18 or 22 inch. Once they are installed, your stylist will custom color and cut the hair to any length that you desire so that your new hair and real hair blend naturally.

HOW ARE THEY ATTACHED TO YOUR HEAD?

I got two rows of hand tied hair. Each row has multiple pieces of hair attached to it so even if you get one row you would be adding a significant amount of hair. They are attached with a bead and string to create a track along your scalp and then the row of hair is sewn to that track. Since I have two rows in my hair, I have two tracks.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO GET THEM?

The initial install can take up to 6 hours. This is because they will need to color your hair, custom color the extensions, install the extensions, blend the two and style your new do!

HOW MUCH DOES THE HAIR COST?

They are an investment. That being said, the cost really is dependent on the person and look you are wanting to achieve. Cost is determined by several factors the main two being desired length and volume. If you just want volume, this is much cheaper! But once you start adding length, this is where it gets more and more expensive because you have to add considerably more hair so that the hair does not look stringy. Since I wanted to add volume and length to my hair, my service fell under the most expensive package which is upwards of $2k.

HOW MUCH IS THE MAINTENANCE?

You have to go into the salon every 6-8 weeks to have the wefts moved up. This process is much less lengthy than the initial install. It can cost anywhere from $500-$800 each time you have them moved up which covers tightening, color, and style.

CAN YOU BRUSH YOUR HAIR?

Yes! You do have to be a little careful at the root of your hair where the extensions are attached but other than that you can brush your hair like normal! I use a wet brush.

DO THEY DAMAGE YOUR HAIR?

NBR extensions are supposed to be the “best” type of extension to minimize hair loss. While you will always have some natural breakage and fall out with extensions, NBRs are the best type because they have the least amount of contact points on your head. The more contact points, the more damaging.  Since these are only attached with minimal beads, they are proven to be less damaging than other types of extensions that have considerably more contact points such as beaded, fusion or even tape in extensions. As I have them for longer, I will keep you all posted on this one!

CAN YOU SWIM WITH THEM?

Yes! You can swim, workout and all that jazz just like you normally would. The only thing to be weary of is getting sunscreen on the extension hair as it can distort the color.

WHERE DID YOU GET THEM DONE?

I go to Amanda at Amanda K Styling for my extensions and color and cannot recommend her enough! Not only does she do amazing work, her salon is beautiful and all of the girls that work there are so much fun! You’ll want to return before the 6-8 mark just to hang out for the day:) If you are interested in getting your hair done at Amanda K Styling, your phone consultation is FREE, but they do require a non-refundable booking deposit of $500 to book an appointment. Your deposit goes towards the price of your first visit.

LONGEVITY.

The hair lasts 4-6 months but depending on how well you take care of it could last longer. You are looking to make the initial investment of $1.5k-$2k twice a year.

COMFORT.

This was one thing I wasn’t prepared for. With previous types of hair extensions I had no problems with them hurting or itching. That was not the case with these. Since I got two rows, my head definitely felt heavier than normal. I had a headache for the first couple of days. Sleeping the first night was a struggle. And they itched like crazy for weeks. All of these things are considered to be normal as your scalp/head is getting used to the new weight and hair.

MAINTENANCE/UPKEEP.

You can wash, dry, brush and style your hair pretty much the exact same way as without extensions. Washing does take a little more precision to get the roots clean but nothing out of the ordinary. The best part of these extensions has been how much longer I can go without washing my hair! I can go around a week before really needing to wash my hair. even before the NBRs, I swore by my silk pillowcase and dry shampoo to prolong my hair washes. I went from having to wash my hair every 4 days to going upwards of 9 days with these extensions.

It does take a long time to dry and style the extensions. You are looking at anywhere between 2-4 hours total depending on the volume/length of your hair. I tend to let my hair air dry for an hour or so before blow drying the rest. This will significantly speed up the amount of time under the heat of the dryer. I usually pick one day a week where I know I don’t need to be anywhere (ex: Sunday afternoon) and wash/style for the week.

STYLING.

You should be able to style your hair any way you want for the most part and not have them show: ponytails, braids, up dos, half up-half down, etc. The only issue you will run into is that you can’t do pigtails or any type of hair do that would require you to part your hair down the middle. Since the rows of hair lay flat across your head they will slightly show if you part your hair down the middle of your head.

Something amazing to note is that the extension hair holds a curl SO wellI. I usually can get away with curling my hair once for the entire week with very minimal touch ups throughout the week. So while it does take quite a bit more time to wash and style your hair it does last so much longer than normal! Another thing to note is that it makes basically every hair style look SO much better. Braids are bigger and better, ponytails are fuller and overall your locks are much more voluminous. If you want to play around with hair accessories I have some of my favorites linked here.

PRODUCTS.

I use all of my same products to wash and style my hair as I did before having extensions. Click through below to see the products that I use to style my hair. I have found that the extension hair is a little more textured than my natural hair so I have added in a heat protectant and deep conditioner.

I am in LOVE with my new hair. If you have always wanted long, luscious locks, this is your best bet. For those that are maybe thinking about getting hair extensions, this would be my advice for you. If you are just wanting extensions for a one time event (for ex: wedding, prom, etc), a more affordable and less permanent option like clip ins would probably be best for you. If you aren’t ready to make the monetary commitment to NBR hair extensions, then tape in extensions might be a good route for you. And lastly, if you are wanting a more permanent option, I cannot say enough good things about my NBR hair extensions. While they are pricey, I 100% think they are worth it. For the amount of overall length and volume I wanted, NBRs were what worked best for me and I am SO happy with the outcome!

If there are any other questions that you would like answered about my hair extensions, please leave them below in the comments and I will answer them there!

Houston… are you ready to Rodeoooo?!

If you are from Texas then you already know what a big deal the Houston Rodeo is. Personally, I look forward to the Rodeo almost just as much as I do Christmas and for really good reason if you’ve heard of a thing called fried Oreos! They might as well shut down work and school when the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo starts because it takes precedent over just about everything. And while we might spend the majority of the year trying to convince non-Texans that we don’t ride horses to work or that cowboy boots and hats aren’t a part of our normal everyday wear, all of that goes right out the window when the Rodeo comes to town.

When it comes to Rodeo fashion, the Rodeo might as well be Texas’ own version of New York Fashion Week. For most of us, it’s our one time of the year to pull out the most Texan attire that we own and flaunt it. Suddenly every person is dressed like they just popped out of an old western. While you can bet to find every guy in a pair of Wranglers, cowboy boots and a cowboy hat, the girls get to have a little more fun with their outfit choices. Long story short, just about anything goes as long as you’ve got your cowgirl boots on. If you live in Texas and don’t own cowgirl boots well then it’s about time you invest in a pair if you plan on sticking around the Lone Star State.

A few trends that I always love when Rodeo season comes around are embroidered attire, denim chambray, big belts and turquoise jewelry. I promise you will see it all. And I promise if you do dress to the Southern 9’s that you will not be out of place one bit. You will be more out of place if you don’t dress the part! If you are new to the Houston Rodeo or just need a little western style inspiration, see below!

On top of all of the Texan fashion, you can also bet to find a lot of country music, carnival rides, animals and a total food-lovers heaven. If you haven’t already given up hope on those New Year’s resolutions, you sure will after attending the Rodeo. They can fry just about anything you can imagine- Oreos, Twinkies, cheesecake, candy bars, ice cream, meat, vegetables you name it and they can fry it! You can always go for an old fashioned turkey leg but with all of the endless possibilities, you should probably take a page out of my book and try one of everything 🙂

Diamond Rings: A Love Story For The Ages

Next year my parents will have been married for 30 years! My dad has been wanting to upgrade my mom’s ring for decades now but she has always politely declined as she says that her original ring holds too much sentimental value. Well after several years of persuasion, my mom finally decided that year 30 could be the year her ring got a little “level up”. My mom and I recently went to Robbins Brothers Houston store to check out their ring selection. While I am nowhere near the point in my life that would require a ring on my left finger, it’s still fun to fantasize so I never say no when mama asks me to tag along 🙂

Apparently when it comes to diamond rings, the apple does in fact fall far from the tree because our taste in rings are totally different. Mom’s original diamond ring is marquise shaped and is what she is still predominantly drawn to 30 years later. She ventured out to also try on a few cushion cut and pear shaped rings, all in the white gold family.

The ring that I am wearing above (on the right) was also one of Mom’s selections. This vintage fancy shape ring from the Poem Collection is unlike any other ring I’ve ever seen and immediately made it one of our favorites. The more unique, the better!

A new element that Mama is wanting to incorporate with this ring is sapphire. My dad has tried to buy her many sapphire rings over the years because it is her birthstone and favorite gem, but my mom has always said that she would rather spend the money elsewhere. Now that they are upgrading her ring, the thought of making it more unique with sapphires is something she really likes but also makes the ring search a little more complicated. Thankfully Robbins Brothers offers customization on almost any ring! That way if she finds a ring she loves and wants to add sapphires, she can do that no problem.

Before we left, I obviously had to try a few rings on myself, for good measure and all. Almost every ring that I picked out was in the yellow gold or rose gold family. Ever since I received my Aggie Ring (WHOOP!), I predominantly wear gold jewelry to match. I guess the same holds true for engagement rings! Unlike my mom, I was drawn to round, oval and radiant shaped rings and more of a solitaire diamond with a simplistic band. I did try on a few cushion cut rings as well which is about the only ring shape that seemed to agree on!

It’s funny how my mom and I tend to agree on almost everything these days but when it comes to diamonds I guess it’s true that every woman’s love story is different which makes every woman’s ring different too. I’m sure my taste in rings could change a hundred times over before I write my own love story, but it’s still interesting to see how my mom’s taste and I differ.

We met with both Tommy (the general manager) and Antoinette at the Robbins Brothers Houston store near the Galleria and both were such a pleasure to work with! If you are in the market for an engagement ring, wedding band, or sparkly new diamond, Mama Adams and I cannot say enough good things about Robbins Brothers and their staff that truly make the buying experience so much fun! Plus their large, quality selection had me feeling like Reese Witherspoon in the Sweet Home Alabama scene where Patrick Dempsey let’s her take her pic from the entire store selection. Future husband, if you are reading this, take note 😉

Thank you Robbins Brothers Houston for sponsoring this post. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

See ya later Houston!

Dress: Devlin | Shoes: Target | Clutch: Gigi NY | Earrings: Bauble Bar | Lipstick: MAC “Oh Lady”

If you follow me on Instagram, I’ve dropped hints about some big news for a few weeks now. If you know me from my personal life, then you might have already heard, but for the rest of you I wanted to let you in on some BIG life changes happening around here. Without further adieu….

I’m quitting my full-time job!

Ok now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, I’ll explain a bit more. While I’ve never thought that I would find myself blogging full time (at least not until way down the road), it is opening doors to travel opportunities and experience a different pace of life that I can’t pass up. I don’t foresee blogging to be my end all be all and I don’t expect to solely be doing it for long, but for now it is the right decision for me. I expect to start looking for work again after the new year.

I’m having a second hip surgery!

As you might know, I had the first of my two hip surgeries in March of this year. I was out of commission for a good two months and then in physical therapy for another two. I will have the same thing done on my right hip October 9th and expect the same type of recovery. You can read more about my first surgery here.

I’m traveling the world!

Now onto the most exciting news and the most up in the air news. First up, I am heading to New York Fashion Week today for the second time. It will actually just be the first stop on my little adventure. I plan to be traveling for about a month. If you had asked me a month ago, heck even a week ago, my travel plans would have been different than what they are now. Due to recent events with Hurricane Harvey, my aunt is no longer able to travel with me which changes things a bit. I won’t go into detail but let’s just say that as of now, the only thing nailed down is my plane ticket across the pond. So it will literally be a fly by the seat of your pants type of adventure. I don’t want to give everything away (and honestly I don’t even know what everything is), but I will say that I am headed to Boston, Nantucket and then parts of Europe! I plan on blogging about my entire experience and will be sharing all of the pictures on my Instagram if you would like to follow along.

I’m moving!

And last but not least, I have moved back home with my parents temporarily with all of these life changes going on. This piece of the puzzle actually worked out perfectly because Lindsey (my sister/roomie) is also moving to Chicago! So we said see ya later to our little townhouse in the city this week and I am saying hello to the suburbs. I’m definitely a little sad not to be in the city with all of my friends but I am so fortunate for some quality time with my parents and to save a bit of money while I pursue my dreams.

Thank you to everyone who has encouraged me to take this leap of faith. I can’t wait to share all of my experiences with you all.
