First Date Outfits + Stories

First Date Outfits

Having been single for the majority of the last few years, I have been on more first dates than I can count. Some good, some bad and some just down right awkward.  I certainly have quite the playbook of funny first date stories and I’m honestly not quite sure why I’ve been keeping them all to myself. Scroll to the bottom of this post to share in the laughs. In addition to funny first date stories, I also think I’ve perfected the first date outfit by now.

My requirements in a first date outfit are this. It has to show a little skin while still being modest. We’re out here trying to trap a husband not a one night stand kind of guy! It also has to be cute without being too over the top. This is mainly because I don’t want to look like I tried too hard. We don’t want anything going to their heads after all 😛

There is a 99.9% chance you will find me in all black on a first date or if I’m going out for any occasion for that matter. Black is the most slimming and flattering color so of course us girls opt to wear it when we want to look our best! Now how formal the date is will determine how dressy your outfit should be. I always err on the more casual side. If you are going out for drinks, then jeans or a casual skirt are the way to go. If homeboy is ballsy/fancy enough to take you to dinner, you better pull out that LBD (little black dress) you’ve been saving up. For shoes, I almost always wear heels because they elongate your legs and well because your girl just needs an excuse to rock the absurd amount of heels that I own. But you do you girl. If the date location is outside, it is more than okay to wear sandals or flats.

Now for the first date stories! After writing them out, I realized how many bad first dates I’ve been on so I narrowed it down to the top 5 worst/funniest.

Crawfish King– I knew this wasn’t going to turn out well from the moment he asked me to go get crawfish. I mean not the sexiest first date peeling and sucking on crawdaddy’s. Definitely not my best look anyway. Between the awkward convo, him telling me he had no job and was depressed, and then getting mad at me when I politely told him I had to head home (after 4 hours) there was no second date.

Margarita Man– After telling him I hated Mexican food and margaritas he insisted on Papasitos. Besides the fact that something obviously got lost in translation, while on the date he told me that he goes to Papasitos every single day of the week for their happy hour and has 3 large margaritas. Alone. Thank you, next.

Sushi PTSD– As much as I love sushi I usually try to steer clear of it on first dates as it’s not the easiest, most ladylike food to maneuver on a first date. He picked a hole in the wall sushi place that I had never heard of. I almost suggested another place but 1) I didn’t want to offend him and 2) thought it might be a hidden gem despite the fact I’d never heard of it and I’ve lived in Houston my entire life. WRONG. We were the only ones in the entire place. The sushi was horrible and chewy. Later that night I experienced my first case of food poisoning.

Mr. Workaholic – Met this guy on Hinge and got together for drinks. He had his laptop out the entire time we were there. We had one drink, he walked me to my car and then went in for the kiss. I went in for the hug 😳

Baseball Boy– He took me out to the ballgame! He got so drunk that he kept falling asleep during the game. I think he snoozed for at least 3 innings. Funny part of the story is that I hit if off with another guy sitting next to me while Baseball Boy was sleeping and he ended up asking me for my number! #score

How to Wear Bold Prints at the Office

Bold Prints at the Office

Bold Prints at the Office

Leopard, plaid and now snakeskin are three prints that you can expect to see a lot of this season in the fashion industry and that includes work wear too! I was pleasantly surprised to find several leopard and plaid pieces at Walmart recently that were not only cute but affordable and office appropriate too!

If you work at a more conservative office, start small with prints for example wear a pair of leopard flats or possibly a leopard camisole under a solid blazer. Small pops of print are still professional while bringing a little bit of flare into the otherwise repetitive mix. If you are in a more relaxed environment and want to be a little more bold, purchase a statement piece. For example this could be a plaid blazer, a leopard pair of slacks or a snakeskin dress. The key to statement pieces is pairing them with a more muted, usually solid colored piece.

This peplum top is one of those great work to weekend tops that I fully plan on wearing with a leather jacket, jeans and a pair of strappy black heels.

Where I Buy Affordable Denim

Abercrombie Denim

I try not to have favorites in the fashion industry since my job is to try everything once but there is one store that I constantly come back to for their quality, affordable denim and that’s Abercrombie. While I love a pair of designer denim just as much as the next person, I can honestly say I own more Abercrombie jeans than anything else in my closet. I know this for a fact because I just organized all of my jeans by designer and the Abercrombie stack had 3 times as many as any other brand!

Abercrombie has all of their jeans 50% off right now so I’m sharing a few of my favorite styles. For sizing reference, I am typically a 25 in Abercrombie jeans. They run true to size but if you are worried about the fit I would size up as I am a 24/25/0 in other brands and always wear a 25 here.

The Ultra High Rise Ankle Straight Jeans are my most worn pair of denim in my closet right now. They are so easy to throw on with a basic tee, bodysuit or casual top. These jeans do not have any stretch so if in between sizes, size up. They also come in several different washes and styles.

The Ultra High Rise Mom Jeans are another favorite of mine. This pair doesn’t have pockets on the back so they are very flattering on the rear. They also do not have any stretch so if you are in between sizes, size up! The belt is detachable and can be traded out. I am 5’4″ and in the regular length.

The Button Front High Rise Super Skinny Ankle Jeans are another favorite. These are my go to when I am going out because they have a ton of stretch and are very comfortable. My favorite way to wear them is with a bodysuit or lace cami. The jeans come in almost 20 different washes and styles if you aren’t interested in the black, distressed style.

Cruising Around Houston

Walmart Huffy Bike

A few weeks ago I posted an Instagram with yet another pair of biker shorts (the obsession runs deep), and captioned the photo “True Story: my biker shorts have never been on a bike”. And then all of .2 seconds later I had an epiphany that a bicycle would be a great, fun idea to stay active. I’ve been trying to find new ways lately to stay active that aren’t just going to the gym so I hopped on Walmart’s website to see if I could find a cheap, decent bike since these ideas are usually fleeting and no sense in spending a lot of money on something that might not seem like a good idea in two weeks!

I had read and heard really good reviews about Huffy bikes and found this one for just under $150! It reminds me of an old timey bike that you would find cruising down to the beach. I was already sold on how cute it was but the basket, drink and phone holder were definitely selling points too and the very best part was that I ordered it and got it the very next day! Walmart has free next day delivery on over 100,000 items when you spend $35. So my crazy Sunday idea turned into a Monday reality. 2019, y’all.

If you are looking for an affordable cruiser bike, I highly suggest this one! The bicycle does come dismantled so you will have to assemble it but it honestly was not hard at all. It took maybe 30 minutes to put together. The seat is very comfortable and it’s just as cute in person as it is online. I will say that some of the plastic parts are not the highest quality  but overall, for less than $150 the bike is more than enough for what I want to use it for. If you don’t want the old timey look, Huffy actually makes the same bike for under $100 here.
