My Surgery Diaries

Hip Dysplasia Surgery, PAO, Big News reveal

Well I’ve sat down to write this post more times than I can count and each time I end up calling it off. I had planned to tell you all about my surgery prior to it actually happening. Then I decided I would wait until after the fact so that I would have more answers and more understanding of what my actual condition would be.

Well fast forward to a week after surgery and each day has been a struggle. Sitting up in bed, reaching for a glass of water, sleeping, eating, and other basic activities are seemingly impossible. And to be frank, writing a blog post has been the least of my worries. As much as I have wanted to fill you all in on what has been going on in my life, sometimes life itself gets in the way. Sometimes it’s messy and ugly and down right hard.

Last Friday, I had major hip surgery on my left hip in order to correct hip dysplasia. The surgery that I had was called a Periacetabular Osteotomy or a PAO for short. I’ll save you the trouble of running to your good friend Google and summarize what this is but let me first tell you how it all started.

Although I was never tested as a baby, I was most likely born with hip dysplasia as it is not something that is commonly developed after birth. I did not discover that I had this until 5th grade when I felt like my right hip was popping out of socket. Several doctors later and I found out that that was not the case and that I had a more serious issue. Insert my hip dysplasia diagnosis here.

I went from doctor to doctor to doctor all the way through high school and each one said the same thing. I would have to have major surgery that would put me in bed for 3 months and then would later have to learn to walk again. Well at this point in my life and being that my hips didn’t KILL me, the obvious answer for this college party ready girl was a HELL NO to surgery.

Fast forward about 6 years and I now have a desk job where I sit for 8 hours a day. Apparently my hips have a problem with that being that they are all high maintenance and what not. I decided it was time to go see another doctor. He said my only answer was surgery so I went to another doctor to which I heard the same diagnosis.

Here was the hard part. I was not in excruciating pain. My hips did not cause me daily pain. I was living what I thought to be a pretty normal life. I was having to make a decision to undergo a major surgery solely on the fact that my hips were disintegrating and at some point they would completely give out. At that point, my only option would be total hip replacements. My doctor told me it could be 2 years or it could be 10 but either way the hips that you are born with will always be better than fake ones.

I’ve always been a realist and someone who needs to see all of the facts. I talked to a couple of girls who had had this same surgery and both of them decided to go through with it because they were in serious pain. So why did I need to do this? For me it was completely preventative and not so much a necessity right now. Thoughts like “what if I could make it another 25 years on these hips” consumed me. I felt like why put myself through this now when I could play my odds and see how long my hips could make it?

At this point I prayed. I prayed hard. I prayed for a sign because I honestly had no idea what to do. On one hand I rationalized that this would technically be the perfect time to do it. My job was flexible enough that I could take off for the surgery, I was not tied down with a significant other or kids, and my parents were willing to take care of me post-op. On the other hand I felt like why fix something that is not broken? Ok so I was kind of broken. But I have always been the type that won’t take any sort of medicine or seek help until I’m basically dying. So the thought of undergoing “preventative” surgery was just crazy talk to me.

Well from the time that I started praying for clarity, my hip pain got considerably worse. I was experiencing pain every day and at a stronger pain level than I had ever had. Keep in mind this started after we were told that our only option was surgery from TWO different doctors. This was my sign people. I’ve gone 25 years on these hips and they had never hurt me the way they did in the 2 months leading up to my surgery.

We scheduled my PAO surgery for my left hip for March 24th (last Friday). I would have to have both hips done separately as this is a major surgery and only one hip could be done at a time. My right hip will be done at a later date. Long story short, a PAO is where the surgeon cuts out the socket portion of your hip, rotates it to correctly cover the hip ball, and reattaches it with several screws. The surgery was 6 hours long and I had to stay in the hospital for 4 days. So pretty serious stuff.

The good news is that I am home (well at my parent’s) and I have an AMAZING nurse aka Mama bear 🙂 It is a long road to recovery but I am getting stronger and more mobile each day. I have been completely overwhelmed by family, friends and even complete strangers that have reached out to me to bless me with their prayers, presence and gifts. Never have I ever felt so loved and for that I am truly thankful to each and every one of you. It is because of all of you that I have felt motivated to continue on and push through the pain. I know that this phase is temporary and that God promises comforting for the broken hearted and pain stricken.

God never allows pain without a purpose in the lives of His children. He never allows Satan, nor circumstances, nor any ill-intending person to afflict us unless He uses that affliction for our good. God never wastes pain. He always causes it to work together for our ultimate good, the good of conforming us more to the likeness of His Son (Romans 8:28-29)

I know that this may not answer all of your questions right now and I apologize for leaving you all in the dark for the time being. I greatly appreciate your thoughts, prayers, and well wishes during this time as well as understanding that I’m not completely sure what my blogging schedule will be like. Since writing is a huge outlet for me, I don’t foresee becoming a stranger to you all, but then again these pain meds make me say and do some crazy things so I apologize in advance for any crazy talk, inappropriate language, rants, and anything else that seems un-Shelbi-like. Just go with it 🙂

My look // Dress | Clutch | Shoes | Bracelets

Britt’s look // Dress | Clutch | Shoes

No sooner than Britt and I touched back down in Houston, we had already started planning our next getaway. It’s true what they say, traveling really is the only thing that you can buy that makes you richer. Well richer and fatter because lords knows you eat and drink WAY too much on vacation. Nonetheless, I think it’s safe to say that the travel bug has officially bit me so I might just be a fashion blogger turned travel blogger. I’ll keep you updated on that one 🙂

With it being the first day of Spring and vacation on the brain, I thought what better time to share a few fashion items that I am loving for vacation this year. If you are headed to the beach or somewhere tropical, Britt and I have partnered up with Elaine Turner to share with you what you can start stocking up on for those Spring vacations (besides the obvious necessities like swimsuits, sun hats and all the sunscreen in the world!).

1. Tassels

If you thought that tassels were big last year, think again. Tassels are making an appearance on just about anything and everything you can imagine, from earrings to clothing to bags. If you are worried about over accessorizing when it comes to tassels, I’m here to let you know that the limit does not exist. I wore my stacked bracelets with almost every single outfit on vacation and I’d be lying if I told you that I did not wear tassel earrings with every single outfit AND swimsuit. The obsession runs deep with this one.

2. Bright colors

As soon as the warmer weather hits, bright colors come out of hiding! This year especially orange, fuchsia, yellow, and lime green are huge. There are plenty of bright colored tops and dresses out there but if you aren’t into wearing such bold colors, the best way to add in color is through your accessories. The colorful tassels on my clutch went perfectly with several outfits that I brought with me on the trip. You can also bring in color to your outfit with your jewelry or shoes.

3. Cork accessories

I first fell in love with cork last year when Elaine Turner came out with this bag and it was the perfect accessory for my trip to Napa because wine has corks, duh 😉 I love that Elaine Turner has now designed an entire cork line that is the perfect festive touch for the beach or warmer weather. Since the color of cork is a beautiful nude color, the best part is that it goes with everything. I was almost surprised at how much I wore this bag and shoe combo on the trip. I’m serious when I say that they went with everything! A plus when you are trying to pack lightly!

Elaine Turner is kindly offering It’s All Chic To Me readers 15% off of your entire purchase with code SHELBI17. If you are needing to spruce up your Spring wardrobe, be sure to use this special discount to treat yourself to something special!

For more ideas on what to start stocking up on or if you are interested in getting a glimpse at what all you can be sure to see when it comes to Spring fashion, make sure to also check out Britt’s post today where she is also sharing her 3 must haves.

*Thank you Elaine Turner for sponsoring this post. As always, all thoughts and opinions are my own.*

Beach Trip Packing Guide

The day is finally here that I get on a plane to Puerto Vallarta! I thought it only appropriate to share some of my not-so-obvious things that I can’t go to the beach without. You can shop these directly by clicking on the pictures above or the corresponding numbers below the picture collage.

Sunhat and sunglasses– Hopefully it’s going to be sunny wherever you go so bring your favorite shades and hat. Both of these are an absolute must for the beach to keep your skin protected from the sun. I always opt for a wider brim hat to get the most coverage. The sequins and cute message were an added bonus. As for sunglasses- I linked my new favorite pair of Karen Walkers which are a total splurge, but if you you don’t want to risk losing or messing up your favorites, here is a knock off pair that is less than $25.

Swimsuits– If you saw my recent post on one-piece swimsuits under $100, then you know I am a huge fan of this trend. The beach is one of the most appropriate places to show some skin, so find a swimsuit (or 2) that you look and feel good in. It’s not everyday that you get to show off that bod! I will be taking this sexy little number with me!

Beach shoes– The easiest way to make something instantly cute? Monogram it! Flip flops are a necessity at the beach and these Marley Lilly ones are just about the cutest, well-made pair I have seen in awhile. I suggest bringing along a pair that you can wear to the beach but will also double as a cute alternative to wear with other beach outfits. Besides the flips flops, bring a dressier pair of sandals like a wedge or espadrille for a nicer dinner or event. I usually stick to 2 pairs of shoes on vacations and that’s it.

Comfy clothes– Bring a few comfortable outfits to throw on after a long day at the beach. My go-to is a graphic tee and denim shorts. If it’s one thing you remember to pack, make it a pair of denim shorts. They are durable, can be worn in the sand and go with everything! If I am wanting to get a bit more dressed up, rompers are my favorite. They are quick, cute, and don’t take up too much room in your suitcase.

Jewelry– Keep it simple and versatile. Bring a couple pairs of earrings and a necklace that will match multiple outfits. My current favorite pair of earrings are the Bauble Bar tassel earrings.

Skin care– While my routine at the beach really doesn’t differ too much from my everyday routine, there are 2 products I wouldn’t dream of traveling without. Those are the Tula exfoliating mask and hydrating cream. When I am at the beach, I don’t like wearing a ton of make up (because I actually want to get some sun), so catching pimples before they start is a must. I will dab the exfoliating mask on blemishes before bed and wake up to a clear face! The sun will dehydrate your skin so I make sure to put a layer of moisturizer on my face in the morning and then also carry around my favorite chapstick.

Beach essentials– Besides the obvious, some things that keep my life a bit easier and more enjoyable at the beach are a good book, a large tote, and a pool float. If you are like me, you probably don’t ever get time to just relax and read for pleasure- well the beach is the perfect time for that! A large tote is a must to load up everything you will be taking to the beach- towels, books, sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, etc. Another thing that has come in handy for me is bringing a smaller bag to put my phone, money and any other essentials in so that I am not digging forever in my larger tote. Lastly, the pool float is perfect because is can double as a beach chair or a relaxing way to sunbathe in the ocean. Plus it’s the perfect photo opp 🙂

Want to see what I am doing in Puerto Vallarta while I am there? Follow along with me on snapchat [shelbiadams] or Instagram stories for all of my crazy, real-life shenanigans. Also, I wanted to let you all know that since I will be in full vacation mode, there will not be a post up on Monday. Lastly don’t forget that I’ve already posted everything that I will be wearing on the trip here so that you can grab it before anything sells out! Have a great weekend everyone!

If you could use a vacation I would like you to raise your hand right now. I’m assuming all of you are raising your hands and I might as well be jumping up and down waving both because this girl needs the beach and a drank STAT! Well I’m excited to say that’s exactly where my happy butt will be in less than 2 days and I could not be more thrilled!

Britt, from Hello Honey blog, and I spontaneously decided a couple of weeks ago that we wanted an adult Spring Break adventure. Although we are certainly not above having a few too many drinks and dancing on the tables, we both were down for a more relaxing beach trip. Mexico was the obvious answer to our Spring Break wannabe blues. So without further ado, we are off to Puerto Vallarta in just 2 short days!

I have been snatching up all of the vacation wear that I can find. Nothing is more true when it comes to packing about suddenly needing 32 outfits for 3 days of vacation. #oops. If you are interested in getting a sneak peak of what I will be bringing along with me, I have listed everything here and also created a Spring Break wish list here.

This top is already packed in my ever growing suitcase and these jeans haven’t even made it in there yet because I wear them on a daily basis. There is a 99.9% chance I will even wear them on the plane. You know that pair of pants that very rarely gets washed because they are almost always on you? These are them and I have no shame whatsoever! As a side note, do make sure to size down in these as they run big.

I’d love for you to share along in our mini adult Spring Break adventures! Follow along with us on my Snapchat (shelbiadams) or Instagram as I post everything that we will be doing, where we are staying, and OF COURSE all of my outfits!
